Help! I was absent! What should I do?
I understand being sick. As a child, I got sick a lot. As an adult, I still get sick often. Getting sick happens. Below I've given simple directions on what to do if you are absent. Please know that, while I allow some time for you to get caught up with the rest of the class, being absent is no excuse for not learning the information. Just because you were sick, does not mean that you get a pass and don't have to learn it. You will be given time, but I do expect you to put forward effort to learn it.
If you were/ are sick:
1) Make sure your mom or dad calls the office ( 805-596-4055 ) to tell them that you are sick and will be absent.
2) Get better! As a student who got sick A LOT during my childhood, I totally understand getting sick. It's not something you want or plan. It just happens. Instead of worrying about missing school, just focus on healing. While missing school is hard, it is important to take the time to get better.
3) Check my website. I post the homework on the "Homework" tab and tutorial videos on the "Tutorials & Notes" tab. Once you're feeling better, you need to complete any homework or assignments you may have missed. You can print the homework, copy down the problems, or get a copy of it from the green box as you walk in. 7th Grade work is in the green folders, 8th grade work is in the red folders. Find the date your were absent and the work should be in that folder.
Need help? If you have a hard time completing the homework, check the HW Help on the CPM website. You can also get additional help in math lab (Tuesdays & Thursdays 3 - 4 in Mr. Ou's room) or see me. I am available most days before school (7:45 - 8:10), at break, at 8th grade lunch (ask me first), and after school (most days until 4). If you plan on coming in, it is helpful to ask me first so I can make sure I'm there (and not in a meeting or collaborating with another teacher.)
4) Turn in your work. Turn in your work into the brown box next to my printer. You have 1 day for each day you were absent to make up any work. In my 8th-grade classes, I do accept late work for half credit up to two weeks after the assignment. In 7ACC I do not accept late work. For example, if Timmy was absent Tuesday, he has Wednesday to make up his work, and it would be due on Thursday before class. If Timmy turned in his work on Friday, he would get half credit on it in 8th grade and would receive a zero in 7ACC.
5) Absent on Test Day? If you were absent during a test or quiz, you need to schedule a time to make it up. The same rules as homework applies. You should schedule your makeup quiz your first day back. Please ask me when a good time would be to make up the quiz. The best times to make up a quiz is before school, break or lunch. If you fail to schedule make-up quiz within the allotted amount of time, you will receive half of your earned score. Quizzes can only be made up for up to two weeks after the original test is given.
Absent on a Friday? If you were absent on Friday, you need to turn in your warm-ups and have your notes graded. The warm-ups and a copy of your notes can be turned in to the brown box next to my printer. Write "absent" on the dates you were absent for your warm-ups.

Planned Absence?
If you have a planned absence or an unexcused absence, the rules for make ups are a little different. You still need to check my website and turn in any work, but the due dates are different.
1) Make sure your mom or dad calls the office ( 805-596-4055 ) to tell them that you will be absent. Please have them call BEFORE the absence. If you are going to be absent for 5 days or more, give the office at least two weeks notice.
2) Check my website. I post the homework on the "Homework" tab. You need to complete any homework or assignments you will miss. You should get the homework from me BEFORE you are absent. If you failed to do this, you can print the homework, or copy down the problems.
Need help? If you have a hard time completing the homework, see the HW help of the CPM website.
3) Turn in your work. Turn in your work into the brown box next to my printer. Your work is due the day you return to school. (You should have received the work BEFORE you left, so you already had extra time to complete it.) In 8th-grade ONLY, I do accept late work for half credit up to two weeks after the assignment.
4) Absent for a Test or Quiz? If you had a planned (or unexcused) absent on a test or quiz day, you need to take the quiz BEFORE you are absent. Please give me enough notice to schedule a time before you are gone. (For example, if you will be gone on Friday, don't wait to tell me until class on Thursday.) If you fail to take the quiz BEFORE your absence, you will receive half of your earned score. Quizzes can only be made up for up to two weeks after the original test is given.
Absent on Friday? You also need to turn in your warm-ups. Write "absent" on the dates you will be absent for your warm-ups.
